Everyone at the Milledgeville Police Department has spent the past week trying to come to terms with the sudden loss of longtime dispatcher Jamie Wilson.
Wilson, who died on the job on Sunday had been with the department for 19 years.
“He was a part of our family, a big part of our family,” Milledgeville Police Chief Dray Swicord told Lake Country Today. “He was a gentle giant and loved his job.”
Peer support counselors were made available this week to members of the department who needed it.

Celebration Of Life for Mr. Jamie L. Wilson, age 40 of Sparta, Georgia will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Sandy Run A.M.E. Church Cemetery, 743 Powell Grove Road Sparta, Georgia. Jamie was called home to glory on Sunday, February 6, 2022 after a fun filled day with his mother and family celebrating her birthday. Reverend Angela Starling will officiate the services.
Jamie was employed as a Dispatcher for the past 19 years with the Milledgeville Police Department. He was a devoted and active member of Sandy Run A.M.E. Church where he was a choir member, a member of the young people’s department of the A.M.E. church, a steward, and class leader. Jamie was president of his senior class graduating in 2000, and a member of Omega Psi Phi.
Jamie leaves behind to cherish those precious and fond memories, his loving mother, Mrs. Jannie Hawkins, three sisters, Tracey Hawkins, Shawn Stephens and Tonya Cummings, two brothers, Eric (Pamela) Wilson and Timothy (Colette) Hawkins, aunts, Viola Warren, Dorothy Bolston, Ollie (Lucius) Warren, Geraldine (Jesse) Hatcher, Barbara Wilson and Ernestine (Randolph) Dixon, one uncle Lucius (Beatrice) Hawkins, his devoted cousin and prayer warrior, Mrs. Dorothy Wheeler, and loving host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
