The smoke reported by many residents in the southern end of the lake area on Monday was caused by a controlled burn in the Cedar Creek Wildlife Management Area, the Forest Service confirmed.
Baldwin County Fire Rescue Chief Victor Young said his department got several calls from residents about the smoke, but dispatchers were told by Putnam County authorities not to be alarmed.
A “prescribed fire” caused the smoke. According to the US Forest Service, this means the “controlled application of fire by a team of fire experts under specified weather conditions that help restore health to fire-adapted environments.”
