Local officials confirmed Monday they recovered the body of the man who went missing while on a fishing boat in Lake Sinclair last week after six days of searching.
“Boat mounted sonar picked up an image which we believed to be a good target to put the divers on,” Sgt. Bubba Stanford with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources said in a phone interview with Lake Country Today.
Crews used a specialized remote-operated vehicle or R.O.V. to confirm the location. It then marked the site, and a dive team recovered the body of 71-year-old Joseph Roberson of Dublin.
According to Stanford, strong wind and cold temperatures hampered recovery efforts over the weekend.
Officials eventually recovered the body in 22 ft of water near the 2-3 acre area they had mapped out to search.
Roberson went missing last Tuesday after the boat he was on began to take on water. According to investigators, his wife, Reba Cherry Roberson, 77, secured her life jacket and was rescued.
Investigations into what caused the boat to take on water are ongoing. Both Sgt. Stanford and Baldwin County Fire Rescue Chief Victor Young say they are grateful to the multiple agencies that assisted with the recovery effort and the family for their patience and understanding.
