If you’ve been in downtown Milledgeville recently, you might’ve noticed all the new greenery in the bowl-like planters. That’s because businesses and organizations have adopted each one and planted in them.
Event Coordinator for Milledgeville Main Street Amanda Greene says it all started at a board meeting a few months ago. The planters had not been kept up and they discussed taking them all out.
Greene wanted them to stay, so she proposed an idea. Get businesses to adopt them and plant in them.
All it took was posting on social media to get people to adopt them.
“Everybody was real excited… then it really took off,” Greene said.
All 52 planters were adopted, and there’s a waiting list for next year.
“The community is, I think, excited to see them all,” she said.
You can walk four blocks to see them all, plus two down at the pavilion.
Greene says it’s a great way to spruce up downtown, and promote the businesses. Each planter has a tag with the name of the business who adopted it.
“We just kinda wanted to highlight all of them,” Greene said.
Main Street is asking people to update them in October, right before the Deep Roots Festival. Soon after, a Green Thumb winner will be announced for the best planter.
