Officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation want motorists to be aware of a lane shift beginning Thursday, Dec. 16, on a two-mile stretch of US 441.
“It’s going to be a lot different compared to how you normally drive through there,” said Kyle Collins, spokesman for the Eastern District of the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).
The eight-mile widening project kicked into high gear more than a year ago. “And they are rocking and rolling on that job,” Collins said. “From the Putnam County line north towards the I-20 interchange.”
A press release from GDOT East described the area affected as “spanning two miles from the southern end of the project at the Putnam County line north.”
“Crews will place temporary signs and striping for this staged shift that moves one lane in each direction to newly built highway sections. All affected property owners will be contacted and alerted to the traffic pattern change approaching,” the release continued.
The GDOT statement warns drivers to “expect the unexpected. Pay attention, slow down, and watch for workers. GDOT is committed to keeping workers and travelers safe.”
The $39.291 million US 441 Morgan County widening project, spanning over eight miles from the Putnam County line to I-20, will be complete by late spring 2024.
