On Saturday, community leaders in Milledgeville will dedicate a bridge in honor of a local trailblazer.
Dennette Odum Jackson was the first Black female to serve on the Milledgeville City Council––a post she held for three terms from 1994 to 2005.
Representative Rick Williams sponsored the resolution renaming the Highway 22 bridge. HR 144 was adopted by the legislature 165-0.
According to the press release from the City of Milledgeville, “[Jackson] also served on the advisory council of The Georgia War Veterans Home, served several terms as president of The American Legion Unit 523, was the first African American to serve as president of the sixth district of the State of Georgia American Legion Auxiliary, member of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, was chairman of the Oconee Community Service Board, and president of the local chapter of AARP #5387.”
The ceremony will be at the Voices of Praise Life Enrichment Center at 601 West Montgomery St. at 11 AM on Saturday, October 23rd.
