Former Georgia Secretary of State Cathy Cox begins her first week as the President of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
“I’m a proud Bobcat that cannot wait to get to work here at Georgia College,” Cox said in a video released on Friday. “I know that our vibrant community is rich with ideas and energy that will undoubtedly advance Georgia College along our continued journey toward preeminence.”
Cox takes over following the departure of Dr. Steve Dorman who announced in January that he would “step away” after nine years in the position.
In August, the Board of Regents named the former journalist, lawyer, legislator, and secretary of state the “sole finalist” for the job.
“Georgia College & State University has long played a special role within USG as the state’s public liberal arts college, and it is gaining a new leader who inherently understands how important that mission is both for students and the state,” USG Acting Chancellor Teresa MacCartney said. “Cathy Cox has deep experience in liberal arts education, and a passion to help Georgia College succeed. I congratulate her on her new role.”
Cox served as president of Young Harris College for ten years before becoming the dean of Mercer University School of Law in 2017.
“Today more than ever our graduates are expected to change jobs multiple times throughout their own careers, and indeed many of the jobs of tomorrow may not even exist today,” said Cox. “This is why Georgia College plays such an important role not only for the state of Georgia but also for the many students who choose to attend here.”
Cox is the university’s 12th president.
