More than 12,000 Washington EMC customers are going to get access to high-speed fiber internet service in the next four years. Some could see service by this January.
Governor Brian Kemp made the announcement Friday morning in Tennille.
Washington EMC President and CEO Wendy Sellers says they plan is to lay 3,000 miles of fiber-optic cable over a three-year period. The work should begin later this year. Some customers could get high-speed internet by January.
In the Lake Area, Washington EMC serves 2,327 customers in Hancock County and 1,318 in Baldwin County. Washington EMC also serves Emanuel, Glascock, Jefferson, Johnson, Laurens, Warren, Washington and Wilkinson Counties
Sellers says they plan to have two tiers of service. 100 Mbps service for $49.95 a month and 1000 Mbps service for $79.95 a month.
Sellers says once the full project is complete, then they can look at serving residents and businesses, who are not members of Washington EMC.
Washington EMC’s investment in the project is $52 million. Another $2.5 million from their partner Conexon Connect.
