WHERE ARE THE CAMERAS?
Elbert Street at the GMC Prep school zone, which includes the crosswalk. There is a camera in each direction.
WHEN DO THE CAMERAS OPERATE?
6:40 in the morning to 4:15 in the afternoon, when GMC Prep is in session.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GET CAUGHT SPEEDING?
If you drive 41 or higher in the 30 mph school zone, the owner of the car will get a civil summons. It is similar to a parking ticket, so it does not matter who was driving the car at the time. The first violation is a $75 fine. $125 for all violations after that. If you don’t pay, you will not be able to renew your tags.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
The cameras were installed by a company called RedSpeed. They get 35% of the violation money. The City of Milledgeville gets 65% and can only be used for school safety projects and police equipment.
DATA: SYSTEM HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR A MONTH
The system was activated on March 8th. Up until now, only warnings were sent out. In that month, there was more than 450 incidents of folks going 11+ mph during school hours. The highest speed was clocked at 57 mph.
