Morgan County will have only 5 of their 7 voting precincts open for Tuesday’s runoff elections.

County Elections Director Jennifer Doran says it is because of a shortage of poll workers because of illness and quarantining.

The Morgan County Emergency Polling Location Change Notification that was posted on Twitter December 30, 2020.

Clacks Chapel Fire Station voters will now head to Centennial Baptist Church, about 7 miles away.

Bethany-Springfield Fire Station voters will now head to Buckhead Baptist Church, about 7 miles away.

The same thing happened with these two precincts for the June primary.

Director Doran adds that Bethany-Springfield and Clacks Chapel are their smallest precincts.

In total, the precincts have about 1,300 registered voters in total.

Both are Republican precincts based on November election results.

Jeanne Dufort with Morgan County Democratic Committee criticized the decision. “Closing polling places a week before an important election should be last resort. Morgan Democrats and other groups could have helped find poll workers, if given the chance. It’s disappointing that the BOER made this decision in a hastily called meeting that violated public notice laws.”

As of Monday morning, 7,565 Morgan County voters had either returned an absentee ballot or voted early in-person.

That means 50% of registered voters had voted in the January runoffs.

In November, 79% of voters cast a ballot in Morgan County.
